It's often taken for granted that anyone who suffers in
some indefinable way (stress, grief, etc.) at the hands of a corporation
or government institution is entitled to compensation. Money, in other
words, as a way of saying sorry without actually saying the word 'sorry'.
What no one often asks is exactly why people think money
is what's needed. Fair enough, if it's the case that someone's livelihood
has been lost by physical injury, then maybe compensation is in order.
But when it gets into the territory of 'emotional damage' things get more
suspect. Take a random example; your daughter has been killed in an accident,
caused by a deadly lipstick applicator mistakenly impregnated with cyanide
(it could happen). What do you want? Do you want an enquiry into the company
that produced it, resulting in the firing of those responsible? Or do you
want a guarantee from the company that no such accidents will ever occur?
Fuck that! You want money!
Why? Well, as far as I can see, you want money because
you're a selfish whore who's trying to capitalize on the death of their
daughter, and to use it as a means to make a bit of cash. That's despicable,
but to be honest in these circumstances I don't personally mind much, because
more often than not it's the big multinational corporations who're getting
sued. They can afford it. But it's not only them who get sued; some people
try to sue the government, or the NHS. What the hell is that about?
Right, so let's change the story. Your daughter has been
killed in an accident where cyanide was accidentally mixed up with insulin,
and injected into her. Again, it could happen. So what do you want? A public
enquiry? The doctor responsible being barred from practising medicine?
Fuck, no. You want to take thousands of pounds out of the National Health
Service YOU FUCKING IDIOT.
That's really, really stupid. It's the NHS. It helps people.
It doesn't make harmful cigarettes or unsafe cars, it saves people's lives.
Taking money out of it's budget is criminal and inexcusable, and there
is no excuse for it in any circumstances whatsoever.
Basically what anyone looking for compensation seems to
be saying is, 'I'm really sad that my daughter's died, but if you give
me a million pounds, then I'll be alright.' And let's face it, anyone who
thinks along these lines clearly the aforementioned selfish whore.
This sort of shit only happens in the Western world, of
course; namely someone claiming 'emotional stress' as an excuse to get
money. It's a compensation culture; someone hurts you, and the only way
to cure it is money. That's disgusting.
